Position Summary

A registered professional nurse approved as a faculty member who cooperatively functions to develop, implement, and evaluate the philosophy, objectives, and curriculum of the nursing program following guidelines set by the Missouri State Board of Nursing and South Central Career Center.

 

Essential Job Duties

  • With the coordinator, selects references, library materials, audiovisuals, computer programs and other equipment necessary to facilitate the educational program.
  • With the coordinator, develops and maintains an ongoing systematic development, implementation and evaluation of the total program.
  • Maintains accurate student records including anecdotal notes, attendance records and student grades.
  • Preserves student record confidentiality.
  • Participates in the development of departmental and institutional policies.
  • Promotes positive community relations through actively participating in community activities and professional organizations.
  • Promotes professional relationships with the cooperating agencies and school administration by upholding agency and school rules, regulations and ethical standards.
  • Maintains open communication with program coordinator.
  • Informs coordinator of student clinical and/or theory progress, student and clinical learning site concerns and any other concerns or incidents that might significantly affect the educational program.
  • Responsible for development, implementation and evaluation of theoretical and/or clinical courses of study assigned classes. Follow guidelines as established by the school's philosophy, objectives and as outlined by the school curriculum.
  • Preparing all class and/or clinical materials and tests; updating and revising to ensure currency.
  • Maintains conditions of classrooms, laboratory, student learning center, lounge, clinical setting, and/or faculty offices to ensure proper care of program materials and property.
  • Serves as a member of the Advisory Committee.
  • Participates as needed in faculty meetings, Advisory Committee meetings, Recruitment and Admissions Committee, Practical Nursing Educators Council, and Ad hoc Curriculum committees.
  • Counsels and provides academic advisement and guidance of students.
  • Serves as a professional role model.
  • Participates in capping and graduation ceremonies, educational and social outings.
  • Evaluates student theory and clinical performance and counsels students on results.
  • Scheduling clinical rotation and activities related to assigned course(s) of study.
  • Maintains professional competency through activities in nursing practice, continuing education, academic courses, research or professional writing.
  • Familiarizes self with courses; prepares for classes prior to scheduled class time.
  • Maintains clinical and/or classroom order in a manner conductive to learning.
  • Active member of a professional nursing organization.
  • Develop lesson plans and organizes class/clinical time so that preparation, instruction, lab practice and clean up activities can be accomplished within the allotted time.
  • Demonstrates nursing materials, equipment and processes, using standard or instructor prepared models, mock-ups, sketches or other instructional aids.
  • Maintains a record of student attendance and makes daily reports of students absent.
  • Instructs students in the use of standard precautions, use of personal protective equipment and safety guards in patient care to meet NIOSH standards.
  • Maintains control of storage and use of school-owned property.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of student conduct needed to provide an orderly, safe and productive environment.
  • Keeps informed practical nursing entry level employment requirements and State Board of Nursing requirements.
  • Evaluates the performance, knowledge and skills of each student.
  • Selects and requisitions instructional aids and equipment as needed.
  • Maintains any required inventory records.
  • Assist in the development of the program budget as needed.
  • Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities. Identifies student needs, and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students learn and use problem solving techniques and develop critical thinking skills.
  • Supervises students in clinical agencies.
  • Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs which are mandated by the State Department of Education and State Board of Nursing.
  • Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities. Communicates clearly with teachers, students, administrators, hospitals and nursing home clients and staff.
  • Maintains neat, clean professional appearance, both in classroom and clinical agencies.
  • Participates in developing departmental and institutional policies.
  • Maintains clinical and educational competency.
  • Participates in program activities. Maintains accurate student records and ensures student and client confidentiality in both the classroom and clinical areas.
  • Ensures the availability of academic advisement and guidance of students.
  • Keeps actively involved in recruitment, selection, retention, promotion and graduation of students.
  • Participates in the systematic development, implementation and evaluation of the total program.
  • Understanding, patience and tact in dealing with students, faculty members and community representatives.
  • Ability to maintain good working relations with school administration.
  • Initiative and good judgment.

 

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to move about the classroom or clinical site to the students' location.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with the students, staff and clinical agencies.
  • Must be able to lift and carry textbooks, records and material to and from the storage areas.
  • Must be able to write required reports and forms and check student written work for accuracy.
  • Must be able to stand and/or walk for 8-9 hours per day in clinical agencies.
  • Must maintain patient care skills.
  • Must be able to bend, twist, squat and lift at least I5 -20 pounds.
  • Must be able to push and pull patients and objects.
  • Must have dexterous use of both hands for operation of computers and patient care equipment.
  • Must have visual acuity and capacity to perceive sounds.

Job Requirements

   

MANDATORY

  • Current license to practice as a registered nurse in Missouri. License shall be free from present or past disciplinary action in any jurisdiction.
  • Three (3) years professional nursing experience with a minimum of 20 hours per week within the last five (5) years in clinical nursing practice, administration, or nursing education.
  • Qualified for Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education teacher certification.  Temporary certification must be obtained within three (3) months of appointment.  Coursework for initial teacher certification must be completed within two (2) years of hire
  • Must be able to successfully pass a background check.
  • Must have a minimum of Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning

  • Teaching experience in nursing or related field
